Naming Your Business in NY Part IV
A search with the Department of State only gives you information in NY. In order to protect yourself from unknowingly infringing on another company’s rights, you should also consider running a national trademark search to ensure no one else in the US is using the name or one that is similar to the name you want to use. If you are set on a name that some one else is using, although not in NY, you should consider seeking legal advice to explore whether conducting business under the name may infringe on another company’s rights. Once you decide on a logo, you should also run a search on the logo.
Note: if you are not ready to complete the papers to form your corporation or LLC, you may file an Application for Reservation of Name with the Department of State. An Application for Reservation of Name holds the name for 60 days and may be extended twice for additional periods of 60 days.

Arranged Salad!

Are you tired of the same boring salad? Your salad should never be boring since there are so many ways to combine ingredients. Next time your feeling the salad blues, try this arranged salad.
Ice berg lettuce, purple cabbage, corn, tomato and turkey bacon - instead of tossing the ingredients, arrange them on the plate!

Getting in Shape - Tip 24

Have you been getting enough cardio? This past weekend I took an intense cycling class for an hour. It really pushed me to the limit, but what I noticed was that I felt very refreshed afterwards. So, if you have not been getting cardio into your routine, increase the cardio and see if your mood improves!

Addvancing Your Business Interests

Knowing how to run your business and advance your business interests is your business. If you are not sure about something, do your research and try to figure it out. Don’t rely on others to tell you what you need to know. It is your responsibility to find out!

The online database has a few restrictions. The database does not include corporate or other business entity assumed names filed. Assumed name filings are filed and maintained by the Division of Corporations for corporations, limited liability companies and limited partnerships but searches of records of assumed names used by these entities, must be made by a written, faxed or e-mail request to the Division. All other entities such as general partnerships, sole proprietorships and limited liability partnerships file an assumed name certificate directly with the county clerk in each county in which the entity conducts or transacts business. However, the database includes information for business and not-for-profit corporations, limited partnerships, limited liability companies and limited liability partnerships, as well as other miscellaneous businesses.

Business Etiquette

In the age of instant communication which makes it easier to get a hold of people, it is inexcusable to cancel a meeting at the last minute and not informing the other person of the cancellation. A defense that you could not find the person just does not fly. Text, email and the old fashion voice mail still works. Most business people have a smart phone and I guarantee you that they will be checking emails prior to their meeting – I know I do.

Getting in Shape - Tip 23

How do you stay motivated? You need a goal. Do you have a favorite pair of jeans that has not seen north of your thigh for since you can’t even remember? Then make it your goal to fit into them and give yourself a time frame to do so.

Naming Your Business in NY Part I
The name of your company must be distinguishable from the names of other corporations, limited liability companies and limited partnerships already on file with the Department of State. Further, the name of your company may not include a word or phrase restricted by another statute unless the conditions of the restriction have been complied with.

Getting in Shape - Tip 22

When you are trying to get in shape, you need a strong support net. For example if you are married, you have to make sure that your spouse is going to support your eating habit changes even if that means that your spouse will also have to make some sacrifices. Another thing, don’t keep food in your house that will make you to cheat. For instance, keeping cookies for when your necies or nephews come over. Try to find some healthy replacements – you may be surprise that they actually like it!

Have You Heard About the Red Flags Rule?

How many business owners know of the existence of the Red Flags Rule? My guess is not a lot. The Red Flags Rule, which has been in effect since January 1, 2008, is “an anti-fraud regulation, requiring ‘creditors’ and ‘financial institutions’ with covered accounts to implement programs to identify, detect, and respond to the warning signs, or ‘red flags,’ that could indicate identity theft.” However, enforcement of the Rule has been delayed several times and has currently been delayed to June 1, 2010. For the purpose of this summary, I will only address the rule as it applies to “creditors”.

Although the enforcement has been delayed once again, you still need to know how enforcement of the rule affects your business. If you are considered a creditor under the rule and have a covered account, you need to develop, implement and administer an identity theft program. The definition of creditor is key because it is a definition that might not be considered in every day usage. Whether the rule applies to your business does not have to do with your industry, but whether your activities fall under the purview of the rule.

The rule has more than one definition of creditor but for the purpose of this summary I will only look at one. Creditor is defined broadly and includes “businesses or organizations that regularly defer payment for goods or services or provide goods or services and bill customers later.” Whether your company falls within the definition of “creditor” depends on how and when you collect payment for your services.

Even though you are considered a creditor under the rule, you do not have to implement the identity theft programs unless you have covered accounts. By looking at your existing and new accounts, you must determine whether your accounts fall within any of the two categories of covered accounts. That is, a consumer account or “ ‘any other account that a financial institution or creditor offers or maintains for which there is a reasonably foreseeable risk to customers or to the safety and soundness of the financial institution or creditor from identity theft, including financial, operational, compliance, reputation, or litigation risks.’ ”

If your business fit the definition of a creditor and you have covered accounts, you must comply with a four step process which includes identifying relevant red flags, detecting red flags, preventing and mitigating identity theft and updating your program.

Note: This brief summary was compiled with information taken from the Federal Trade Commission, Fighting Fraud with The Red Flags Rule – A How to Guide for Business. It is not intended as legal advice and you should check out the FTC’s website at http://www.ftc.gov/redflagsrule to get more information on how this rule applies to your business.

Holiday Cooking - 3

With a month until Thanksgiving, I am still trying to finalize a menu. I'm think it will be a fusion between Caribbean cuisine and American favorites!

I Feel Like Fish!

Have you ever gotten tired of eating the same thing over and over? How about tired of eating chicken? There are probably hundreds of ways to prepare chicken, but it is still chicken! How about fish? Here are some fun ways to have your fish. First dish is a grilled yellow fin tuna over a stir-fry cabbage slaw. Second dish is a tilapia sandwich with a spring mix salad.

Getting in Shape - Tip 21

When you are developing an exercise routine, remember not to over do it. Take your time and gradually increase your fitness level. It takes longer but it reduces the risk of injury. I have worked out for 3 days straight and I’m feeling a little tired. I might just take it easy tomorrow. Don’t be afraid to take breaks!

It is very hard to maintain a workout routine and it is very easy to get bored doing the same routine over and over again. Thus, you should try to mix it up sometime. Quick Corn Muffins!

I have been temporarily banned from all food containing wheat or dairy – until further notice from my doctor. I never realized how prevalent wheat and dairy was in food products. After two weeks of eats egg whites for breakfast, I was getting seriously bored. I decided that I would make corn muffins and since I was being lazy decided to buy a pre-packaged mix. To my surprise, it had wheat flour in it! So, I got in my creative mode and came up with a quick corn muffin recipe. Here you go!

Ingredients
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup sugar
2 medium eggs
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
2 tbsp canola oil
1 tbsp water

Directions

Preheat over to 350 degrees.

Add oil; beat well.
Stir in cornmeal, baking powder and baking soda into egg mixture.
Pour into muffin pan.
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Yields 6 muffins.

Executive Insights - What does your business card say about you?

Alright, in the past two weeks I attended four networking events and I must say they were successful! I had some great leads and if all goes well and it’s God’s will, I will land a few clients. However, I noticed a couple of things that gave me pause. One, it is always rude to interrupt people when they are talking and wedge yourself in the conversation. Why can’t people get this golden rule? Has society gotten so far removed from good manners that rudeness is common place? Second, the cheap, flimsy looking business cards and yes the scissors cutouts with the handwritten scrawl – will NOT do! Are you kidding me? Remember, your business card is your chance to make an impression about your professionalism and that of your business. What is a person to think if you give them such a card? It is not only a poor reflection on you but it is also a poor reflection on your business and first impressions are ever lasting. Once again I offer you the link to www.vistaprint.com use it!

Networking for Success!

As I have mentioned time and time again, in person networking is the key to growing a successful business. Sure online networking is great to connect with people, but there is something special when you meet someone in person. You can make a lasting impression and that meeting could possible lead to introductions to other people that person knows and thus more potential clients. This is what happened to me last week when I was out networking. I know it takes work and motivation to get off your couch. However, it is well worth it so put on your killer outfit (that goes for the guys too) and hit the pavement! See pic - when I roll, I bring my A-game!

The LLC in New York Part I - Formation
A Limited Liability Company is a hybrid form that combines corporation-style limited liability with partnership-style flexibility. The owners are called members. It is an unincorporated business organization which is formed when one or more persons or business entity, called organizers, prepare, sign and file the Articles of Organization with the Department of State. The articles of organization must include name of the LLC, the county location, designation of Secretary of State as its agent for service of process and an address to which the Secretary of State may mail a copy of any process received.
After formation of the LLC, you are required to publish a notice in two newspapers which must be designated by the county clerk of the county in which the office of the LLC is to be located over six consecutive weeks. A Certificate of Publication, with an affidavit of publication from each newspaper must be filed with the Department of State.
Furthermore, the operating agreement which is the primary document that establishes the rights, powers, duties, liabilities and obligations of the members between themselves and with respect to the LLC may be entered into before, at the time of, or within 90 days after the filing of the Articles of Organization. It is an internal document of the LLC and is not filed with the Department of State.

Getting in Shape - Tip 19

It’s cold outside and you do not feel like trekking it to the gym. However, you are determined to get your workout on. So, do so at home. There are simple exercises you can do in the comfort of your home such as walking lunges, squats, crunches and sit-ups. You might even want to invest in a pair of dumbbells. Don’t let the weather stop you from getting in shape!

Quest to become a Certified Personal Trainer - Update

Today I found out that the books will not be shipped until October 19th, bummer. Well, you will just have to keep checking back for updates!

Executive Networking – Networking Etiquette

If you are an entrepreneur, at some point you will attend networking events. Some people find this to be a scary experience and you never knew how shy you could be until you are thrust into a room full of strangers. How do you break the ice? Just work up the nerve, walk up to a person, say “hi” and introduce yourself. But, who do you approach? First, look for someone who is not talking to anyone – that’s a good place to start.

Things to avoid while networking:
1. Never and I repeat NEVER, interject yourself into someone else’s conversation. It’s just plain rude! With that said, that’s exactly what happened to me last night when I was out networking. I was talking to someone and this lady came up in the middle of our conversation, stood between the two of us and started chatting on and on to the person I was speaking to; ignoring the fact that I was standing there. After she was finished, she decided to talk to me. Needless to say, I was not pleased, but I did not even bother to tell her how rude she was being.

2. Don’t over sell. Let me rephrase this, don’t sell at all. It is not a business expo; you are not trying to sell a product. What you’re trying to do is to make a contact – maybe a valuable one that can refer you business in the future. Last night, I was talking to a guy that was convinced that I should join his team and sell some type of energy drink. I told him I was not interested because I had my own business to run and I am generally busy with other things. However, he still insisted that I take his card and check out his website when I get a chance. If you try to sell to a person who is not interested, you will just annoy him or her and you can guarantee that person will never refer anyone to you.

3. Don’t ask a lawyer for free advice! This is the number one sin in my book. The last time I check, I still owe the student loan people for my education; don’t expect me to tell you the answer to your question. Besides, I only practice business formation and transactions, entertainment law and immigration (very specific area). I don't necessarily know other areas of law. However, some people assume that because I’m a lawyer, they can just start telling me their legal issue and I would just answer right there and then. I don’t think the Bar or my malpractice carrier would approve of such behavior. So, if you see me out networking, just know it is neither the time nor the place to seek legal advice. Please make an appointment and I will be happy to tell you what I charge.

Staying in Touch with Business Contacts

I am sure you have heard the saying: out of sight out of mind. So, how do you stay in touch with the contacts you have made throughout the year without inundating them with a barrage of emails? The key is to keep you and your business fresh in their minds without emailing them all the time. Most people don’t have the time or inclination to read a ton of emails. A good way to stay in touch is to send greetings around the holiday season or send an article or information that you may find to be of interest to that contact. Last year, I started sending out custom made greeting cards to contacts I met during the year along with a refrigerator calendar magnet which lists my practice areas. For postcards and greeting cards ideas, check out www.vistaprint.com

Where have all the food pictures gone?

To our loyal readers, I’ve been admonished because I have failed to add more food pictures as of late. Back by popular demand and for your salivation purposes, feast on these pics! Yor entree is Zesty Lime Grilled Chicken Breast with Stuffed Baked Potato and a vegetable medley. Your dessert is a Blackberry Crisp with a Honey, Vanilla Yogurt topping. Enjoy!

Holiday Cooking - 2

Alright, I have caved; I’m fully in the holiday spirit. Not Halloween, Thanksgiving! This year I will be entertaining and it will be a food fest at my place! I’m putting together the guest list as we speak and I’m soliciting ideas for a menu. Give me some feed back, I would love to hear from you!

Getting in Shape - Tip 18

Winter is slowly but surely approaching. It is a time when a lot of people just let themselves go and don’t have the motivation to stay in shape. However, being healthy and staying fit is a life long commitment. Although you can wear bulky clothes to cover up any weight gain, you are going to resist the temptation to fall into a rut. Just think that you are living in the Caribbean where it is summer all year round and you have to look hot all time! Let’s make a pact that this winter will be different and there will be no need for a New Year’s resolution to loose weight!

However, I soon realized that I was not cut out for competition but to be on the sidelines cheering him on. Although I like to work out to stay fit and healthy, lately, I have noticed that I have been getting a lot of attention at the gym. Even the trainers are impressed by my workout routine. This got me to thinking. Since I love to work out and I’m all about food and nutrition, the next natural step should be to become a Certified Personal Trainer. With that, I’m launching a new segment on my quest to become a certified personal trainer. The books have already been ordered and I’m waiting on the delivery. Training should be fun not work, so it is always good to mix it up! Cross training is one of the ways to this. Some good cross training includes hiking, rock climbing, rowing, roller balding, skiing, etc. - think of it as active recovery!

Getting in Shape - Tip 17

The hardest thing about getting in shape is to stay committed. You need to have will power to fight temptation and stay on track to meet your fitness goals. It is easy to continue to eat junk food. It's hard to say no! But, you have to. I had the most interesting conversation where someone told me that even though she wanted to loose weight she just can't help herself and continued to make bad eating choices. I will be 30 this month and people often tell me I don't have to watch what I eat because I’m in such great shape. My answer is: how did you think I got in shape in the first place? It's hard but you must persevere with all your might because the reward is well worth it!

Executive Networking - Events!!

Even though I would like to attend events every month, sometimes it is not possible to do so. But this month I am stepping it up a notch and will be attending a few events. With that, I launch this new segment holiday cooking. Keep checking back to see what my final thanksgiving menu is going to be!

Getting in Shape - Tip 16

I have mentioned time and time again that every little bit of exercise you can get helps. This past weekend my friend was in town and I took her sightseeing in NYC. A lot of times, instead of taking the subway, we walked. While on a tour today I found out that 20 streets = 1 mile. I thought fantastic! Just imagine how much exercise you can get in if you walk around NYC!

Executive Networking

As I mentioned, networking is key! Online social networking is valuable, but I still like the old fashioned getting out and meeting people. It is a very hard skill to develop, but one that is necessary. If you meet someone in person, it gives you the opportunity for you to make a good impression and for you to decide whether this person is someone you want to associate with. So, get from behind your computers and go out and meet some new contacts!

Getting in Shape - Tip 14

I hope that you are still making the commitment to get in shape. Remember, fast results may not be the best way. Today, I overheard the most interesting conversation on the train today about loosing weight and dieting. One person said that he went on, wait for this, a “lemonade diet”! He lost fifteen pounds in two weeks then gained it all back afterwards. He said all he lost was water. He was trying to convince his friend that fad diets don’t work and she should try eating healthier. Well said! That’s what I have been saying. Gradually changing your eating habits is your key to success!

Just as intervals make you get faster, adequate sleep is also important because this you’re your body recovers the most from a hard workout. It is better than any vitamins, minerals, or supplements!

Observing Life

Part of life is observing your surroundings. Statistics show that America has been growing at the waist line. People don't walk as much as they used. The most troubling thing is that kids are becoming obese and experiencing complications such as diabetes. I have been trying to wrap my brain around how parents can do such a thing to their children. This past weekend I was out to lunch and I observed a little girl, no more than 10, being served an adult size meal. I was horrified... kids don't need that much calories! I looked away and shook my head.
I had mentioned it to my sister who then observed the little girl and noticed she could barely eat it all but did not know how to stop and continued eating until she was red in the face. The adults at the table finally had her pack it up but not without protest. She then wanted dessert to which they thankfully said no. However, she would not be denied and she started eating the sugar from the packets! This is plain crazy! Proper nutrition starts at home it is time to stop buying all those pre-packaged foods and learn how to cook. If you got to buy pre-packaged at least read the label until you find something with more nutritional value. These little kids usually grow up into obese adults and the cycle continues. Parents need to break the cycle by incorporating fruits, veggies and water, yes water into their kids’ diet. If they start early, they would not have a hard time maintaining it when they get older.

Exeutive Baking!

One day I was bored and decided to make a pizza. Not any pizza, but a healthy one; if there is such a thing. I made a whole wheat crust infused with garlic, sun dried tomatoes and parsley and topped it with fat-free mozzarella, onions, bell peppers, olives and jalapenos. My friends always find it odd that I bake when I'm bored!

Executive Desserts

I love to bake, and with baking comes experimentation! One time I was wondering: how do the bakeries make the cherry pies look so good? So I decided to give it a whirl and here is the end result! It looks so authentic; like I bought it at the store! Want to give it a try email the Executive Duo.

Dining in "In Executive Style"

Who said staying at home could not be fancy! I will let you figure this one out!

Excutive Recipes

I have gotten a lot of requests for recipes; especially for those of the Caribbean variety. I hear you loud and clear and now here is my ode to Jamaica!

Quick Jerk Chicken – (done my way!)

Ingredients:
6 chicken thighs
Grace Hot Jerk Seasoning (make sure it is made in Jamaica!!)
Salt

1. Rinse chicken and sprinkle with salt.
2. Add 2 teaspoons of jerk seasoning (caution this seasoning is very hot; add more at your own risk!!) Make sure all the pieces are well coated.
3. Let sit in refrigerator for about an hour. However, if you season it from overnight the flavors will be better.
4. Bake in a 400 degrees oven for about 45 minutes or until chicken is completely cooked.

That’s it you have just made jerk chicken my way. This is the easy way out – I am not even going to try and figure out how to combine the spices from scratch. NOTE: for this to taste authentic you really should try to get Grace Jerk seasoning.

A sole proprietor is personally responsible for all debts of his or her business.

Eating healthy should be an integral part of your training plan. Make sure that you are including a lot of fruits and vegetable into your meals. Also, during the summer, make sure you stay hydrated because as I mentioned before it is easy to become dehydrated when you are training for triathlons.

Cooking Tips

Like with getting in shape, cooking is all about baby steps. Start small then graduate to more complex dishes and in no time you will be cooking like a pro. However, we must first asses your skill level. Can you boil water? I'm not even trying to be funny you would be surprised how many can't do just that! If you can boil water and you know how to turn on your oven , then you can cook. I intend to walk you through some cooking basics so check back; we are going to have fun!

Getting in Shape - Tip 8

What did you find out about what you were eating by keeping your food diary? Leave me a comment; I would love to know what you found. Now, you have been keeping the food diary, examining what your eating and reading labels. The next step is substitution. That is, swapping out certain foods for healthier choices. I started buying wheat bread instead of white and cereals that were low in sugar and fat. I also bought skinless boneless chicken breast. There are many things you can do. Just look at what you’re eating and see if you can find a healthy alternative.

I can’t stress enough, listen to your body! After a hard workout or competition, make sure you drink a lot of fluids and get a lot of rest or it will take longer for you to recover and you run the risk of becoming dehydrated. Trust me I have been there and it is not fun!

Getting in Shape - Tip 7

When you go shopping, do you ever bother to read the labels on the foods that you are buying? I started to read labels because I wanted to know exactly what I was putting into my body. Ever read a label on a bottle of “juice”? One day I did and discovered that some “juice” contained 40% juice or less and sometimes no juice at all! So, I wondered, what was the other 60+ %? Most of the time it was high fructose corn syrup! Since the only time I use corn syrup is when I’m baking, I decided that I was not going to buy any juice unless the bottle said 100% juice. Try making the switch; you will instantly notice a difference in the taste!

The Business Corporation in NY Part III: Taxes
A corporation is required to file franchise tax reports and pay franchise taxes annually even if the corporation does not conduct business or loses money. This requirement begins the date the corporate existence begins and only ends when the corporation is legally dissolved by the Secretary of State. The corporation will need a taxpayer identification number, obtainable from the Federal Internal Revenue Service. A corporation pays state franchise taxes and taxes on income; shareholders pay taxes on income distributed as dividends. Thus, there is a double tax.

Sunday Morning Breakfast in Antigua!

Hope you’re having a great Sunday; I am! I have been getting requests to share Antiguan cuisine and I am happy to oblige. What you have below is the traditional Antiguan Sunday morning breakfast – consisting of salt fish, eggplant, spinach, avocado (we just call it pear in Antigua), fried plantains and a lettuce, tomato and cucumber salad. Sometimes, we have hard boiled eggs too. We eat this with a wood oven or convection oven bread that looks like the picture below. You might say, this is a big breakfast, but it is part of the culture. Generally, Antiguans eat two meals on Sunday – breakfast and dinner. We eat a big breakfast because most of us attend church from around 10 am to 1 pm so we essentially skip lunch. With a breakfast like this you are guaranteed to be full throughout the entire sermon!

When people think about breakfast, they may not see it as being the most romantic meal of the day; dinner has that distinction. However, you can have a romantic breakfast. On a rainy Saturday morning, when you don’t feel like going out, break out the good china, light some candles, make omelet, pancakes, toast and sausage and top it off with hot chocolate with whipped cream. But, don’t forget about the orange juice because you need that vitamin C. Remember, it is all about presentation! Enjoy!

Executive Desserts

Did you take the culinary vacation that I suggested yesterday? Anyway, what is a meal without dessert? There is always room for dessert and the best ones are the ones you make yourself! Step away from the store bought pound cake and experience a taste of the Caribbean with a pineapple upside down cake! The one on the left is the traditional one that you are probably used to seeing. The one on the right is my little twist which I like to call Pina Colada Island Dream Cake because the cake batter is infused with grated coconut and cream of coconut. So, chill out, relax, and grab a glass of cool lemonade and a slice of cake. Ahh… life is good!

The Business Corporation in NY Part I: Formation
A corporation is a legal entity separate and distinct from the individual(s) who compose the business. The owners are called shareholders. It is formed when one or more persons, called incorporators, who are 18 or older signs the Certificate of Incorporation. The Certificate of Incorporation must include the name of the corporation, the purpose, county location, stock structure, designation of the Secretary of State for service of process and an address within the United States to which the Secretary of State may mail a copy of any process received.
When the completed Certificate of Incorporation is filed with the Department of State, the corporation existence begins. After the corporation existence begins, the incorporator or incorporators must hold an organization meeting for the purpose of adopting initial by-laws, electing directors, and transacting any other business. Getting in Shape - Tip 5

Now the key to becoming a healthier eater, just like with working out, is baby steps. Small steps so that you gradually adjust to the change. This is not about going on a fad diet to get fast results; it is about a lifestyle change. For instance, I eat a lot of cereal both hot and cold so I started with changing the milk I drank. I currently drink fat free/skim milk. However, I did not go from full cream to fat free overnight. That would have never worked! I stepped down gradually. I started drinking 2% and after a few months 1% then in another few months fat free. BecauseI did it this way, I was not tempted to fall off the bandwagon.

Now we get to my favorite part running! One of the ways to run faster is to keep your legs under you when you run. That is, run with less back lift and tuck your hip under. Distance runners have a tendency to run with high back lift and it takes longer for your legs to make a complete revolution with a high back lift.

Ah, Summer… Love it or hate it, it is my favorite time of year because it reminds me of Antigua where during the day the temperature rarely drops below 80 or gets beyond 85 – all year long. Oh, the island breeze! With that setting in mind, summer is a great time, if it is not too humid, to dine al fresco; and you could do so In Executive Style without leaving your house. So, if you have a balcony, porch, patio, whatever, cook some great Caribbean food and take a free culinary vacation.

Why not try making some oxtails with red beans & rice, fried and boiled plantains, potato salad, and a little lettuce & tomato salad? Cool down with a cold refreshing drink of your choice and don’t forget the cherry because it just makes it better! Remember, it is all about presentation! Hope I did not make you hungry :-).

Getting in Shape - Tip 4

So, you’re on a mission to develop and live a healthy lifestyle. I remember when I started to take a closer look at what I was eating seven years ago. It began when I found out that my mom had high cholesterol and high blood pressure and that I would be a likely candidate to develop the same problem. Well, as the saying goes prevention is better than cure so I decided to change the way I was eating at 23 and not wait until I turned 40.

You are getting comfortable with the swim and now you have to work on your cycling. To become a faster cyclist, you have to increase your power on the bike. One of the ways to increase your power, is to do one leg cycling drills in a high gear. Do about 5 sets on each leg for 4 minutes.

Cooking to Relax and Ease Boredom?

People have different ways to relax and ease boredom. Some people watch TV, surf the net, etc. For me, I work out or cook. Yes, you read correctly, I cook! It totally calms and relaxes me and brings out a creative side that only exists in the kitchen. The video below demonstrates one such moment.

Getting in Shape - Tip 3

You have looked into your cupboards and refrigerator and you are not particularly proud of what you found. You say to yourself, “it can’t be that bad. I don’t even eat half that stuff.” Now, it is time for a rude awakening. Get a note book and call it your food diary. Starting tomorrow, eat like you normally do but keep track of everything you are eating everyday for a week. Caution: the results might shock you! Until tomorrow….

Getting in Shape - Tip 1

Ok, so you have struggled with your weight and you want to get in shape. The hardest thing with working out is getting started. Once you start you will realize that it is not so hard. The key here is baby steps. You don't want to push yourself so hard the first time that you get so sore and can't work out for another week. If all you can do is walk for 10 minutes -- then do that. Remember to consult your physician before beginning any exercise routine. Check back for more tips.

Want to train like a Pro Triathlete

If you decide you have what it takes to take on Triathlons, the first thing you should know is that 50% of your training should be cycling since 50% of a triathlon is cycling. Check back for more tips.

How I became a Triathlete

I ran track in college - 800m and 1500m. When those events were not taking me to the Olympics, I decided to switch to triathlon in 2004. I thought I knew how to swim since I grew up on an island and I used to ride my bike every where. Little did I know, that did not prepare me for what I was about to embark upon. My family was supportive, but thought I was two shades from crazy to take on two more sports to my routine. However, they were there from the very beginning supporting me when I drifted off course during my first competitive swim.

Now five years later, my swim has improved tremendously, the biking has gotten better and I am dominant in the run. Further, I am on a quest to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London. It would be sort of a homecoming when I make it -- to compete in the country where I was born but never lived. So keep checking back for updates on my progress and with your support, I can go all the way!!

Executive Triathlete in Action!!

Starting Mason Firm, LLC

I started Mason Firm, LLC when I got tired of people telling me that I had an impressive resume but could not be hired at this time – and that was before the recession. Imagine if I went looking for a job now. With a lot of big law firms laying off associates and some new law grads experiencing difficulty finding a job, I like the position that I am in – a turning point – big firms are going under and small firms are on the rise.

Starting a solo law firm was not the easiest thing to do and because of all the ethical rules that lawyers have to follow, there were extra steps I had to take. I had to do a lot of research to ensure that I understood what type of business form would work best for me, my ethical responsibilities in terms of trust accounts, advertising and firm names and basic accounting concepts. Mastering these concepts helped me to make prudent decisions as I embarked upon my greatest challenge since studying for the bar exams.

I formed an LLC because I liked the idea of pass through taxation. However, because I could not limit my professional liability I was required to carry malpractice insurance. Having malpractice is always a good idea. You may think that these policies must be prohibitively expensive, but through research I was able to find a company which offered very affordable policies.

My next step was branding. From the start, I set out to brand my company and came up with a color scheme and a logo. This was important because it gave me a sense of legitimacy and that I could roll with the "big boys". Having a small company did not mean that my image had to be shabby. When everything was in place, I started networking and advertising in earnest. It has been a wild ride since I took the leap of faith in 2007 and I hope that you will follow me along for the ride!
